Stepping into a martial arts school for the very first time can feel both exciting and a little intimidating. Whether you are a parent looking to help your child build focus and physical confidence, or an adult seeking a dynamic way to stay active, choosing the right martial arts program is an important decision. At Master Kwon's Tae Kwon Do in Severna Park, we believe the best way to understand the benefits of martial arts is to experience them firsthand on the mat. Our two-day trial program is designed to give beginners a comfortable, low-pressure introduction to training, helping you decide if our community is the right fit for your family.
Why Start with a 2-Day Trial?
Watching a class from the sidelines can give you an idea of the energy in the room, but participating directly provides true insight into how martial arts training feels. A single class can sometimes go by in a blur as you absorb new surroundings, vocabulary, and movements. Having two distinct trial lessons allows students to settle in, absorb what they learned during their first visit, and return for a second session with greater confidence.
Our trial lessons are conducted in a supportive group setting alongside students of similar ages and experience levels. This format lets prospective students experience the structure of our curriculum, see how our instructors communicate, and get a genuine sense of our school culture.
Preparing for Your First Visit
Our dojang is conveniently located at 554D Ritchie Highway in Severna Park, making it an easy drive for residents throughout central Anne Arundel County, including nearby communities like Arnold and Pasadena.
Preparing for your first session is simple:
- What to Wear: You do not need a martial arts uniform (dobok) for your trial. Comfortable athletic clothing—such as sweatpants or leggings and a standard t-shirt—works best. Taekwondo is practiced barefoot on padded safety mats.
- When to Arrive: Plan to arrive about 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled class. This gives you time to check in, tour the facility, meet the staff, and get oriented before class begins.
- What to Bring: Bring a water bottle and an open, positive mindset ready to learn.
Understanding Dojang Etiquette
Taekwondo places deep emphasis on courtesy, integrity, and respect. When entering the training area, students bow toward the flags and the mat as a gesture of appreciation for the training space and their training partners. If you are unfamiliar with these customs, do not worry—learning about Taekwondo traditions and etiquette is an integrated part of the beginner experience.
What Happens on Day One: Laying the Foundation
Your first class begins with a structured group warm-up. This includes light cardiovascular exercise and dynamic stretching to prepare the muscles and joints for movement.
After warming up, beginners are introduced to the core fundamentals of Taekwondo:
- Basic Stances: Learning balanced, stable foot positions such as the attention stance (charyeot) and ready stance (joonbi).
- Fundamental Blocks and Strikes: Practicing basic hand techniques designed to build coordination and spatial awareness.
- Basic Kicking Mechanics: Practicing foundational kicks, such as the front kick, focusing on balance, chambering the leg, and controlled extension.
Throughout this first session, instructors prioritize safety, proper mechanics, and clear instruction. You will never be asked to perform movements beyond your current physical comfort level.
What Happens on Day Two: Building Momentum
When you return for your second class, the environment will already feel familiar. You will know where to place your shoes, how to bow onto the mat, and how the class begins. This familiarity allows you to focus more deeply on the physical training.
During the second session, students typically review the fundamentals introduced in Day One and build upon them. You might practice striking padded targets held by instructors, which helps new students understand distance, timing, and power delivery in a safe environment. You will also get a deeper look into how regular group classes operate, witnessing how goal-setting and positive reinforcement keep students motivated.
Programs Designed for Every Age
Every age group experiences martial arts differently, which is why our classes are organized to meet specific developmental needs:
- Little Tigers (Ages 3–5): Tailored for preschoolers and kindergarteners, this program focuses on listening skills, balance, basic motor control, and following multi-step directions.
- Children's Taekwondo (Ages 6–11): Our Children's Taekwondo curriculum emphasizes focus, self-discipline, goal setting, and practical self-defense while building athleticism and peer respect.
- Teens & Adults (Ages 12+): Designed for older youth and adults, our teen and adult martial arts classes deliver a total-body workout combining traditional forms, conditioning, stress relief, and modern self-defense principles.
In addition to our core evening and weekend classes, Master Kwon's Tae Kwon Do also offers an After School Program (ages 5–12), Summer Camp (ages 5–12), and weekend Birthday Parties.
